Harmonica Workshop

Duration : Approximately one hour long

Number of participants : Maximum 10 per class

Instrument : Each participant receives a harmonica (C diatonic)

Pedagogy

Participants learn at their own pace. The facilitator acts more as a guide than a teacher through the course material. Ideally, the workshops are held indoors and the participants are asked to be seated in a circle. A snack is given at the end.

Improvisation

Through improvisational games and “playing the blues”, the participants develop communication, expression and creative skill sets.

Breathing Exercises

The harmonica is the only wind instrument with which one draws and blows air in order to obtain all the notes. Respiratory techniques are therefore taught in a particular manner. For example, the harmonica player is constantly asked to breathe into the instrument to keep a rhythm, i.e.: blow air for two beats, draw air for the preceding two beats, etc. Practicing this technique strengthens the participants’ diaphragms which develops a greater lung capacity. This also increases concentration and diminishes stress.

Musical Theory and Ensemble Playing

The lay-out of the notes on the harmonica lends itself to an easy and fast introduction to harmony and melody. When blowing or drawing air into one or many holes, one obtains either single notes (melody) or chords (harmony). Effectively, the harmonica has the role of either an accompanist (chords) or a soloist (melody) and consequently, thanks to musical arrangements, the importance of each participant is illustrated within the ensemble.

Musical Repertoire

The first lessons focus on learning songs and folk melodies that are popular in local culture. Afterwards, new pieces from different cultures are added to the repertoire.

Concert

One of the main goals is to encourage the participants to perform in front of an audience. In doing so, their integration within the community is encouraged and highlighted, as well as increasing their self-esteem and self-confidence.

Harmonica Maintenance

A period of time is allocated to showing the participants how to maintain and repair their harmonicas. Also, low-cost, basic tools such as screwdrivers, screws and files will be provided to the organization.
